Man Of Mystery Competition
  Updated 27/11/2007

What is the man of mystery competition all about? - Apparently it's about finding the club member with the most hidden talents. Now! resist the temptation to say lets start with cricket then, that's not nice! ..........................................Webmaster

The first ever Clackmannan County man of mystery competition got under way today. With only 6 of the 10 competitors in attendance. It was decided that Golf at Stirling Uni, would be the first task, with the points being decided by the lowest round. The budding Tiger Woods' hit some good shots, but the entertainment factor was far higher. Trees took a battering, ducks and squirrels dove* for cover, and several shots ended up further back than they had started. The leaderboard after the first event looks like this:

NAME                  ROUND          POINTS
Penfold                 39                  10
Kev                       40                   8
Craig                     44                   6
Scott King             47                   5
Ando                     50                   4
Noor                      60                   3

The next event will be ten pin bowling on Sunday 14th October."

Ando according to the dictionary dove is "a bird with short legs, small head and a large breast" did you have someone in mind or did you mean dived? Webmaster

Round 2 Sunday 14th October

On Sunday the same 5 competitors from the week before headed to the bowling alley in Stirling. Minus Noor who has withdrawn from the contest, due to an impending holiday in Pakistan. And joined by the special guest for the day James Couper.
I thought that there were twelve players involved in this competition? Don't tell me, missing, are the usual wide mouthed frogs who talk a good game until it's time to do the business, then they "forget" to turn up. What about a round on wimping out? .....Webmaster
As usual, the enjoyment came mainly from the lack of talent and humour as opposed to a heated battle. With the exception of Coups, who has the advantage of being able to reach halfway down the lane and won both games with a 126 and a 144. Luckily, he isn't able to enter the full competition. Much to the relief of the remaining 5!

Here's the results from the bowling.
NAME       Game 1     Game 2     Total
Penfold      77             143           220
Kev           88              118          206
Ando         98              100          198
Craig         83              108          191
Scott         112            68            180

That leaves the leaderboard like this.
NAME        Points
Penfold       20
Kev            16
Craig          11
Ando          10
Scott          9

Next up will be pool in the first weekend of November.

Round 3 Saturday 3rd November

On Saturday , the 5 competitors in the Man of Mystery, headed to Rileys in Stirling for the Pool competition. No special guests joined the group. What! no Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, what were they thinking about??  The points were decided in a league format, with everybody playing each other. There is an obvious comment here - but I'm not going to make it. 1 point awarded for a win.
The majority of the games were pretty close, but my tactic of letting my opponent pot half the balls, then pot the white and the black together. ?!! Didn't quite work out.

Heres the result of the pool.

NAME     WON    LOST   POINTS
Craig       4          0          4
Kev         3          1          3
Penfold    2          2          2
Ando       1          3          1
Scott       0          4          0

So the leaderboard now is

NAME          POINTS
Penfold         26
Kev              24
Craig            21
Ando            15
Scott            13

Things are getting pretty tight at the top. The next event will be Cricket 07, on PS2. That's a computer type game - for the uninitiated. Which will again be in a league format. To be held on the 24th/25th of November.

Round 4 Saturday/Sunday 24th/25th November

Sunday saw the penultimate round of the man of mystery competition take a dramatic twist. As Kev King pulled level with Neil Ramsay sp. (Penfold) at the top of the leader board.
Unfortunately Craig Black wasn't able to make it, so there were only 4 competitors at the event, which was watched closely by Alan Oliver. What a comedown from star footballer in Brazil to watching paint dry at the Arns.
The first two games were played on Brian Lara cricket, which took an hour and a half to complete 2 games. So the change to Pro Eveloution !!Soccer 6 was soon made. After beating Scott with patience (Who is this Patience then and should you be hitting Scott with her?) at cricket, PES was right up my street as I won all 3 games. (Well that's a new tactic, better than your tactic in the Pool, change the game to one you know you can win - that's neat). But Penfold and Kev had one one game each (Whit? ah! you mean "won one game" each) and when Scott beat Kev at Tiger Woods, a tie breaker was needed to separate the 3. It came down to the longest drive which Kev won with a mammoth 388 yard drive, followed by Penfold and then Scott. ( you mean Penfold and Scott ran after the drive..... no, probably not).
 So the final standings were.
NAME     WON     LOST     POINTS   TIE BREAKER
Ando        3           0           3
Kev          1            2           1               1
Penfold    1            2            1               2
Scott       1            2            1               3

The leader board is now
 NAME            POINTS
Penfold           32
Kev                 32
Ando               25
Craig               21
Scott               18

The next event will be the fastest lap at Go Karts, over in Larbert. Which will cost roughly £20. Sunday 9th December. Special guests welcome. That's a bit more interesting!

Final Round Sunday 9th December 2007

The 5th and final round of the man of mystery competition took place on Sunday. With only the top 3 competitors taking part in the go karting. The numbers were boosted with special guests, James Cox, Calum Lyons and Alan Oliver.
After the drivers briefing on the rules and instructions they were to abide to, Kev King disappeared from the group. Was he praying for a mechanical failure on penfolds car, handing him victory in the overall event? Was he trying to sneak his Honda into the circuit? No, he was getting his own helmet out of his car! Things were serious!!! Be fair, maybe none of the helmets fitted Kev!
The event was split over two 25 lap sessions, with simply, the fastest lap time winning the event.

NAME           1ST Session    2ND session    Fastest Time     POINTS
Coxy              22.91             22.15                22.15               N/A
Callum            22.96             22.24                22.24               N/A
Ando              22.44              22.40                22.40               10
Kev                23.64              22.75                22.75                8
Penfold           24.13              22.92                22.92                6
Alan               23.62              22.94                22.94                N/A

The final standings are:

NAME           POINTS
Kev               40
Penfold          38
Ando             35
Craig             21
Scott             18

Congratulations to Kev who has proved to have the most hidden talents out of everybody at the club. The first ever man of mystery trophy will be presented on Friday the 28th of December.

Hopefully more people will get involved in this next year, and provide stiffer competition.

Report by Graeme Anderson

At a spectacular ceremony reminiscent of the Oscars, Kevin King received the First Man of Mystery trophy. The trophy was presented by (sick as a parrot) club captain Graeme Anderson (who in a spirit on magnanimity rose from his sick bed to infect everyone else in the room) and present this fabulous trophy.

Kevin's acceptance speech was - well you had to be there..... Next years competition is predicted to be even better than this years inaugural event, with contestants saving up for the metal polish for the trophy even now.
