Press release from Clackmannanshire
Council re- Primary Cricket Festival at The Arns
On Thursday 29th May, 350 children from local primary schools in Clackmannanshire
descended onto The Arns, home of Clackmannan County Cricket Club for their
annual cricket festival. The aim of the day was to give children
the opportunity to experience the skills involved in the game of cricket
through the Taggarts Jaguar National Introductory Programme Challenge. The
challenge consists of 6 cricket specific drills that include catching,
bowling, throwing and striking. The aim of the challenge is to get
as many points as possible in the set time not only for their school but
also for the cricket club. Nothing could be simpler. All we
needed to make the day complete was good weather, and we got it, eventually!!!
Throughout the day the schools that attended, took part in the challenges
but also took part in some small-sided games that were run and coached
by volunteers from the cricket club and other clubs in the surrounding
areas, this gave the children the opportunity to meet a friendly face from
the club.
All those who completed the challenge did themselves and their schools
remarkably proud, as the results were fantastic. (Results are attached)
On the day the Ronald Cunningham Quaich was awarded to the school who worked
well together as a team, listened to the instructions given by the coaches
and who encouraged one another. The award was presented by Lesley Robertson,
Service Manager for Education with Clackmannanshire Council to the deserved
winners Fishcross Primary School.
Lesley Robertson commented “It is fantastic that the CPSSA,
Sport Central, and Clackmannanshire Council’s Sports Development
all worked in partnership along with the local club, Clackmannan County
Cricket Club to deliver an event that over 300 could participate in. All
these people helped ensure the smooth running of the event on the day and
as a result so many aspiring young people enjoyed an excellent day. Well
done to all those involved. I am sure the club are looking forward to welcoming
some of the participating children to their club.”
Councillor McGill who also attended commented that “All the children
appeared to be enjoying a really positive experience. The Arns was buzzing
and it was great to be invited down. We will see you all again next year,
weather permitting of course!”
