| A look at Season 2002, month by month from May to August. The moans, the groans, the ups, the downs. Not much in the way of cricket being played at the Arns but success for the club with the 2nd XI winning the ESCA Division 7 championship. Now put your wellies on and go back in time. | |||||||

2002 Changes in the pipeline The pipeline due to be laid at the road end of the ground by Scottish Water has been delayed till after the end of the season in September. The trees at this end of the ground have been removed and discussion is taking place on what should replace them once the work is done. If you have any views on suitable replacements please contact us at our e-mail address. You can even take part in our sponsor a tree plan! Morne motors on The pro has at last got his club car. It's a "classic" Far Eastern automobile of indeterminate age and interesting "customised" ferric oxide artwork on the doors. This model has a long history of reliability and it won't be long until the Van Wyk family pick up the Graham Grace book of "one hundred and one places to see in Scotland and still make it back in time for practice". Just watch out for the midges in Argyll in July, Morne! Steamboats at the Arns No! Nothing to do with the weather, although over the last two weeks the rain has not been in Spain. Lex Forsyth our bar convenor has a new real ale called Steamboat Ale from the local Forth Brewery, its well worth a try. What a slogan, "get steamboats at the Arns". Lex also has a selection of some unusual bottled beers as well as the usual lager and wee bottles of amber stuff for the oiks. June 2002 Saturday 29th June "Cricket at the Arns" for the first time in five weeks. Despite some rain in the morning the 1st XI game was played. Penicuik were put in to bat, there was little choice since they only had four of a team present at 1.15pm. Penicuik 2's went on to make 101 all out (5pts) Kingsbury 34, Rasul 4 for 26, Cunningham 3 for 36. Clackmannan County 102 (25pts) Rasul 57, Roy 3 for 10. The 2nd XI went to Morton with ten men and lost, the extra player could have made all the difference. The scores, Morton 119 for 9 in 47 overs. Clackmannan 2nds 99 all out. The two Neils, Tranter & Brown setting the innings up with a first wicket partnership of 47, after that it all went to hell in a handcart. Sunday 23nd June The Forth Valley game against Fife Police is cancelled. Both 1st & 2nds Games today are cancelled and todays home game against Scottish Women is cancelled. This brings the total number of senior games cancelled this year to 32! To quote David Henderson the ground convenor " I have never known a season where by mid summers day we have only played one game on grass". U15's out of Scottish Cup The U15 Scottish cup tie against Clydesdale did not go ahead due to the state of the pitch. However the team did travel, a bowl out took place in the watery nets, which we lost 3 to 2. Guess what we are going to be practicing in the nets! 23/6/2002 Alloa man wins Benson & Hedges medal Hows that for a parochial headline? Congratulations to Warwickshire and especially to Dougie Brown on their fabulous win in the Benson & Hedges Trophy against Essex. Nice to see an ex-Clackmannan player doing so well, his mum and dad will be chuffed. Since Douglas plays for the Bears does that make him a Brown Bear? Better that than a bear Brown. Sorry Douglas, I couldn't resist it.18/6/2002 Clackmannan County beaten in Masterton Trophy. An understrength Clackmannan side were well beaten by Holy Cross. Holy Cross scored 154 in 22 overs which Clackmannan could not match. Poor fielding and lack of practice did the damage for Clackmannan.18/6/2002 Exclusive pictures of last weekends Seagulls v Crows game at the Arns plus footage of the clubs rowing eight practicing in the nets(it was too wet they went home!), available now, see Photo Gallery. Coming events; the Arns water skiing championships and "rice planting for therapy and profit".15/6/2002 Under 15's win against Cupar Clackmannan 109 for 2, Cupar 64 for 2 (20 over match)12/6/2002 "Weather" the club needs a change of location The last game to be played at the Arns was the Masterton Trophy on the 21st of May, since then twenty one senior and junior games have had to be cancelled. Plans are to be put before the committee to move the Arns to another location. The plan requires a fleet of tugboats to be financed to tow the ground to somewhere in the Caribbean Sea. It is thought that lottery funding or an arts council grant might be a possibility. 9/6/2002 Results 9/6/2002 All the weekends games were cancelled due to bad weather. The only game to have been played was the Kwik cricket league game played at Stenhousemuir. Our team of valiant and soaked players were beaten by Stirling. Needing to get 20 runs in the last two overs Graeme and Dan just missed the target, however our young squad are getting better all the time. With a bit more work on the bowling a win is not far away. July 2002 Oh Yes! Very funny, bad enough having to put up with the rain all season but to have an indoor game cancelled because of the weather....... The Mystics & Magicians game was cancelled because, a power cut at the National Cricket Academy led to the game being cancelled for Health & Safety reasons. GORDON BENNETT!! What do we have to do to get a game of cricket?? On the last day of July 2002 the1st XI have played 9 out of 24 scheduled games, the 2nd's 10 from16, The Alloa XI 4 from17 and the poor old Arns XI 1 from 13. The juniors have suffered the same sort of fate with less than half of the junior games being played. A month of the season to go, a ground which seems permanently under two inches of water, player numbers and bar takings sinking fast, who would be a cricketer in Scotland? Wednesday's eagerly awaited annual game against the Mystics & Magicians will not be played outside due to the duckin' weather. The big ducks with the shiny heads, no, not the fixture secretary and treasurer, the aquatic ones that are swimming on the Arns. A six-a-side competition will be held at the National Cricket Academy in Edinburgh between 2pm and 6pm. Then an evenings bottle opening at the club.30/7/2002 Congratulations to Ash Rasul who represented the club in another East District game on Sunday, Ash was top scorer again with 54 in 58 minutes. However the game was abandoned due to rain 13 overs into the East District fielding stint. 28/7/2002 The Alloa XI played Dalgety Bay on Sunday at Dalgety Bay. This is a Sunday friendly usually played twice in the season. It is popular with the players because it is always played in good spirit by both sides. The game was played in this seasons now customary 'orrible weather although the ground was hard and the artificial wicket true. Note, there is a fortune out there for the designer of waterproof white cricket clothing for Scotland. Dalgety Bay batted first and scored 150, M Forbes 48no A Muktar 2 for 22 M Booth 2 for 34. The ten man Alloa side fielded well in the drizzle, the forty overs being split between eight bowlers. The Alloa side just failed by 7 runs to match the Dalgety Bay score. Alloa XI 143, M Van Vyk 73no, G Oliver 15, A Oliver 10, F Chaudry 10. Morne played the coaching "batting partner" role to perfection. Alan and Graham Oliver benefited from Morne's words of wisdom in the middle, this played at least some part in the two youngsters time at the crease and success with the bat. The Dalgety Bay side had the worst of the rain and bowled well with a ball which by the end had turned into a red bar of soap. Terrible conditions made bearable by the attitude of the guys playing the game. 28/7/2002 The 1st XI achieved a winning draw at "home" in Newfield, Edinburgh. Batting first Clackmannan made 193 for 4 in 52 overs, Morne Van Vyk 70 n.o. Ash Rasul a splendid 48, Gordon Oliver 36 & Bobby Alum 23. Grange attained 143 for 7 with J Gray 29 and W Milroy 27 their top scorers. The Clackmannan bowling saw Ash take 3 for 55 in 15 overs and Bobbie 2 for 23 in 13. Special mention of Fouad Chaudry's spell of 1 for 22 in 11 overs and under 15 player Matthew Booths first 1st team wicket 1 for 12. Good sharp fielding by the young Clackmannan side, with three U15 in the side, helped the side to a moral victory. The Clackmannan side gained 16 pts to Grange2's 6pts.................................... The 2nd XI went to Goldenacre to play Heriots 4 and played on the "semi artificial" wicket on the main rugby pitch. While there was no-one in the main stand there were two spectators basking in deck chairs in the unaccustomed sunshine. The 2nds made best use of the sunshine and a strange pitch to total 127 for 9 in 47 overs. Neil Tranter top scoring with 39 and Mike Nash 23, complemented by a good team batting display saw a useful score posted in the long grass. Heriots restricted by sharp Clackmannan fielding and fairly tight bowling could only make 72 all out. Paul Nash was once again the most successful of the Clackmannan bowlers, 5 for 33 (before he left the game for his Carribean holiday, giving U13 captain, Greig Taylor his chance to stop runs rather than note them in the score book). Mike Nash and Steve Watkins bowled well in support of Paul. Alison Ramsay bowled well once she got over the shock of opening the bowling and the difference in weight between the womens and mens ball, at least thats her excuse. 25pts to Clackmannan and the promotion chase still very much in their sights. 28/7/2002 Due to state of the Arns, this weeks "home" games will all be played away. The 1st XI in Edinburgh and the Alloa XI v Dalgety Bay game on Sunday at Dalgety Bay. 24/7/2002 It is with great regret that the club has informed the SCU that the Arns will not be playable for the Small Clubs Cup Final in August. It seemed only fair to warn the SCU and allow them to find another ground, since, at the moment ours could not do credit to the final of this competition. We hope that the SCU will consider us again in the future when we solve our drainage problems.24/7/2002 In yet another week of cancelled games none of the teams have played. Saturdays games against Watsonians and Holy Cross and Sundays against Ferguslie all fell foul of the weather. One bright spot however young Graham Oliver did get a game for Forth Valley U14's on Friday and did well with the bat.20/7/2002 The Arns XI game against Stirling Fire Brigade has been cancelled , Williamfield is unplayable. 17/7/2002 Work begins tomorrow, Wednesday, to try and improve the drainage of the ground. The first step being taken is to have the ground sand slit, a process of cutting 10" deep grooves 6" apart all over the ground. This should break up the surface compaction and allow the water to run deeper to the drains. The work is scheduled to take about three days. The 2nd teams game on Saturday has been moved to Stirling University.16/7/2002 Saturday 13th July The 2nd team's home game was moved to Stirling University since the Arns was once again unplayable. West Lothian 3's were put in to bat and found it difficult to score. West Lothian 3's scored 38 all out. T Kerr 10, P Nash 5 for 12. Clackmannan 2nds overtook this total without loss. Clackmannan 2nd's were 39 for 0, S Watkins 26, J Thomas 9. Tight bowling and fielding by the Clackmannan side paid dividends, congratulations to keeper Jeff Thomas who had a hand in five of the wickets. One the other hand the 1st team played at Goldenacre against Heriots 2's where Clackmannans lack of match and net practice was a chicken come home to roost. Clackmannan made 106 all out, Heriots overtook the Clackmannan total in style, with a six hit, Heriots score, 111 for 4. Note; Sundays game against Glenrothes is cancelled Glenrothes can't raise a team. 10th July Arns XI game v Gargunnock moved to Gargunnock due to tha Arns being unplayable. Game Cancelled Gargunnocks pitch unplayable.10/7/2002 BP Tourfest Kwik Cricket coaching This day has been postponed to later in the season when hopefully the ground will be playable. For more details speak to the Junior coaching staff.(see junior home page for details).9/7/2002 Weekend 6/7th July Yet again the 1st XI home game was cancelled due to the ground being unplayable. The 2nd XI went to Peebles County and notched up a win. The scores were Peebles County 107 all out, M Nevin 23, N Buckingham 19, P Nash 4 for 33, M Nash 4 for 23. Clackmannan County 2nd XI 108 for 6 A Rasul 48, R Ramsay 16, A Mackay 3 for 24. Sunday's Forth Cricket Union game against Broomhall went ahead with Clackmannan fielding ten players(6 of the ten being juniors) the scores were Clackmannan 103 all out I Davies 22, N Ramsay 22, N Jahinger 20 M Warren 2 for 18 Broomhall 104 for 3 L Docherty 26 NO, S Davidson 23, T Hine 1 for 18 off 8 overs. Congratulations to Ash Rasul and Mark Cunningham who played for the East District against West on Sunday the 7th of July. Although East were beaten by a strong West team Ash was top scorer with 25 and Mark second top with 18. Ash also managed 1 for 9 bowling the demon leg spin. A good performance by the Clackmannan duo.7/7/2002
Clackmannan U15 defeat Dunfermline U15 in league clash. On a very wet Arns pitch on Tuesday Clackmannan beat Dunfermline in a game which proved both sides enthusiasm for the game. Playing in conditions the seniors would have baulked at the scores were Dunfermline 66 for 7, D Jennings 14, R Passe 2 for 3, A Oliver 2 for 7. Clackmannan 67 for 5, N Jahinger 32 NO, J Johnston 3 for 12. 3/7/2002 August 2002 The end of season senior teams prize night was a great success with those who attended enjoying a great night of food, drink and things! More- and pictures in the social section. Clackmannan 1st XI completed their 2002 season with a draw against Leith at Leith, due to the Arns being unplayable again. Batting first Leith made 194 all out in 49.2 overs.G Daz 45, I Higgins 45, A Ul Hamed 33; D Henderson 5 for 44 in 10 overs, F Chaudry 4 for 25 in 13 overs 6 maidens. Clackmannans reply suffered a mid life crisis with three wickets falling for not much before David Henderson and Gordon Oliver steered the innings through the last 13 overs for the draw. Clackmannan 136 for 9 after 50 overs. M Van Wyk 70, S Lakeland 13, N Caplan 5 for 19. Gordon Oliver took 4 catches including one at mid wicket which stunned the crowd by its brilliance. A bad season from the weather point of view for the ones, which has had a detrimental effect on the teams performance in the latter part of the season. With so many players struggling to find form they are fortunate that they still seem to be ensconsed in the lower half of the division. Points? Leith 19 Clackmannan 7. 25/8/2002 Subject to confirmation by ESCA Clackmannan 2nd XI have won the Division 7 league. Clackmannan were put in to bat and made 146 in 45 overs. J Allen 43, I Davies 21, M Nash 20. Musselburgh replied with 29 all out M Cunningham 7 for 9 in 7 overs. Well done guys you deserve your success.24/8/2002 Clackmannan 2nd XI v Largo Losing the toss yet again Clackmannan were put in to bat. after a shaky start Mark Cunningham and Mike Nash put on 50 runs for the third wicket. From there the team all chipped in to finish Clackmannan 131 all out. M Cunningham 37, A Campbell 24, M Nash 19. The Largo support sensed victory but it was not to be, again the 2nds bowling came up trumps. Largo 55 all out in the 2nd last over. Graham Bayes 5 for 15 in 12 overs, M Nash 4 for 10 in 11overs 6 maidens (again!). The accuracy of the seconds bowling this year has played a large part in their present position at the top of the league. For the first time this year Bayzey used his run-up and was noticeably quicker, oh dear! its not a good idea to attempt to wind our Graham up. Scotland reject indeed! 18/8/2002 Clackmannan 1st XI v Marchmont played at Stirling University. The expression, started badly and got worse sums up Clackmannan's innings. Marchmonts opening bowlers were enough to see Clackmannan back in the "pavilion" by ten past two. Total 40 all out, M Van Wyk 19, G Collier 5 for 20 S Kramer 4 for 15. The Marchmont innings was complete by ten past three having made 42 for the loss of two wickets. H Chetty 20, S MacGregor 17 no, A Rasul 2 for 17. Excuses? Some days its not worth getting up. 17/8/2002 Clackmannan CCC Kwik Cricketers visit to Doune CC Kwik cricket festival on Thursday 15th August was cancelled due to bad weather. The other two games organised for the U13 & U15 juniors for this week have also been cancelled for the same reason. 15/8/2002 It is hoped to run a players awards night on the Friday 23rd of August at the club. Where 1st and 2nd team player awards (of one type or another) will be dispensed and a buffet will be available. This will give all the players the chance to say goodbye to Morne and The Doc and frequent the ground where we used to play our home games.14/8/2002 The clubs six a side tournament and fun day has been cancelled due to the condition of the ground. 14/8/2002 Alison Ramsay, has just returned from her trip to The European Championships in Dublin with the Scotland womens U21 squad. The squad finished 2nd equal with Ireland, a creditable performance on the first international outing of the national U21 team. Details of the scorecards available on the SCU website.15/8/2002 At a committee meeting last week it was agreed that due to the waterlogged state of the Arns it will not be possible for CCCC to play home fixtures for at least the rest of the season. We have taken professional advice from turf and drainage specialists and while we await their reports, it would appear that major works will be required to make the ground playable again for cricket. ESCA have sanctioned a re-arrangement of fixtures for this season and this is in hand. More information will be forthcoming on this shortly. 11/8/2002 The Clackmannan 2nd XI v Boroughmuir 2nd XI was played at Gargunnock and for once this season the game was played without interuption by rain. The club would like to expess our thanks to Gargunnock VCC and Mr Scott for the use of the ground. Clackmannan batted first and after a shaky start, both openers back in the pavilion for nought, went on to score 208 for 6 in 45 overs. M Cunningham 87, G Bayes 56, M Nash 33, D Perry 3 for 33. Boroughmuir replied with 67 all out, the last wicket falling with 8 balls of the game to be bowled. D Perry 12, K Skidmore 11, M Nash 5 for 15 in 13 overs 6 Maidens, D K Mudie 2 for 22. The now customary tight 2nd XI fielding and accurate bowling made the difference. Another good result for the two's, promotion should be a formality now? 10/8/2002 Both the 1st XI game and the Sunday game have been cancelled, the 2nd team game is on at Gargunnock. 10/8/2002 Congratulations to former club member Dougie Brown of Warwickshire on his appointment as head coach for Namibia in this years world cup. He takes up his post in September and will be in charge until the end of the world cup.8/8/2002 The Clubs Kwik cricket team travelled to Stirling on Thursday 8th to play in a Forth Valley Tournament. The tournament was organised to play the backlog of league games cancelled by the bad weather in May. The Clackmannan squad aquitted themselves well, all of the players were successful with bat or ball in at least one of the games. In the first game they were narrowly beaten by Doune. Doune 156 to Clackmannan's 124. Clackmannan scored more runs but unfortunately threw away more wickets. In the second game Clackmannan beat St. Modans. St Modans 218 to Clackmannan's 246. St Modans, who were short of players borrowed James, who did well against his own side with both ball and bat, well done James, guess who won't be allowed out of our team again!8/7/2002 In a desperate attempt by the Arns XI to double their tally of games played, a game was organised against Doune. The Arns XI won the toss and decided to bat achieving 110 for 6 in 20 overs, N Jahangir 24, N Ramsay 21no, A Muktar 19, P Henrickson 2 for 22, S Ferrie 1 for 9. Doune replied with 77 for 8 in 20 overs A Davidson 21, A Brown 20, N Ramsay 2 for 3, A Mukhtar 2 for 10, A Oliver 2 for 14. A good team effort with the juniors showing great promise. The Grazings is shaping up to be a great ground with a good batting track, testament to the hard work Doune have expended in a relatively short time. Saturdays 1st XI game against Edinburgh was cancelled due to inclement weather, how many different ways is there to say it was raining AGAIN? 3/8/2002 The 2nd XI played a rain interupted game against SMRH4 at Stirling University. Giving up eventually at 8.15pm after the third stoppage for rain. After being put in to bat Clackmannan were 165 for 7 in 47 overs. S Watkins 16, M Nash 22, J Thomas 33, M Cunningham 37. M J MacColl 2-27, M Coyle 2-38. SMRH replied with 80 for 7 after 82 overs, L J Reilly 31, D Townsend 28, D K Mudie 2-18 in 11 overs, M Nash 2-15 in 8 overs, M Cunningham 2-16 in 9overs. What with the rain, the clouds of midges, the changing rooms closing at 8pm, with the home side still on the pitch, it was an interesting but possibly not idyllic day.3/8/2002 Saturdays 2nd XI v SMRH4 game has been moved to Stirling University since the Arns is flooded. It will be played on the artificial pitch.1/8/2002 September Septembers weather has been great with hardly any rain all month. How do you convey gritted teeth on a keyboard? Another case for organising cricket for the club in September. Maybe the new style limited 20 overs game? Anyone interested? The Water board sewage pipe has been laid and all that remains is the completion of the turfing and repair of the roadway. 26/9/2002 The Clackmannan County touring team are back from last weekends half successful (won 1 lost 1) expedition to Cumbria. Gordon Oliver scored 107 N.O. however the rest of the details seem a bit hazy no doubt they will remember what happened eventually. The web is great for instant news but only if the information is passed on. More details when, IF we get them. I drink to forget. Oh! what do you need to forget. I can't remember. 26/9/2002 The water boards excavation at the Arns is going ahead in dry sunny weather now that the cricket season is past. It is hoped that the pipeline and associated works will help stop the drainage water from the pleasure grounds collecting at the road end of the ground. The engineers reports on the ground indicate that a completely new drainage system is required if the ground is to be returned to its former glory. The financial cost of this is considerable and the committee and club supporters are seeking financial support to undertake the work. A Save the Arns campaign is to be launched in the near future and we would appeal to any of past players and friends who can help in any way to get in touch, either through this site or by mail to the club. 17/9/2002 Club Christmas Prize Draw. Tickets are available (I know its only September) for the Christmas raffle to be drawn on the 13th December (lucky for some). A wide range of prizes are on offer, top prize is 100 Euros and there's drink and dinner at the Dunmar for two and drink and did I mention there was drink and various other prizes and maybe even some drink. Members will be sent tickets by snail mail over the next few days. If you would like tickets contact us through this site and we will send tickets to you. 17/9/2002 The junior awards night will be on Friday 28th September at 7pm. A barbecue and quiz will make up the rest of the entertainment on the night. All members and families welcome.10/9/2002 Congratulations to the 2nd team on their success in winning the ESCA division 7 championship with 253 points and 84.33%, 2 points and 0.67% above second placed Largo. A close run finish well engineered by captain Mike Nash. 2/9/2002 Official confirmation has been recieved from ESCA that the 1st XI has hung on to the First Division by the skin of its teeth, finishing 4th last . Coming up from ESCA division 2, (since Corstorphine have won through to the national league and none of the ESCA area teams have been relegated), will probably be, Fauldhouse and Crammond. 2/9/2002 October Past players. Its always good to hear from past players and over the last few months several have been in touch from all round the world. Its nice to know that in Australia, New Zealand, India and Pakistan the guys are still interested in what's happening in Clackmannan County. We like to hear from our former players where ever they are, contact us and give us your news. 14/10/2002 Former player Dougie Brown has started as coach of Namibia, hoping to lead them to success in the World Cup. Lets hope he can build on the successful season he has just finished. As vice captain of Warwickshire he played a large part in Warwickshires success this yea,r lets hope his enthusiasm and commitment to cricket can fire up Namibia in the competition. Best of luck Douglas. 14/10/2002 Both Morne Van Wyk and Graham Grace have started the South African season in good form. Check out our links page for direct links to their club sites. 12/10/2002 November The club AGM will be held shortly, members will recieve notification within the next ten days. If you have not received notification by then please contact the club through this site. This is a very important AGM for the club and a good attendance is requested. 25/11/2002 The grotty ground. The latest news on the ground is that our standby plan, for next season, of attempting to "flush out the pipes" is a non-starter. The only way that the ground can be saved is to begin again and do the drainage of the whole ground from scratch. If ever there was an incentive for all our members, players and friends to rally round then this is it. If cricket is to be played again on the Arns we need to act now.25/11/2002 The save the Arns appeal fund is gathering pace, with some fine contributions from some old friends and rivals. Thanks, its nice to know we have friends in, what is for the club, a difficult time.25/11/2002 How are the raffle tickets going? Got them all flogged off yet? No! me neither, but there's still time. Not a lot, so go out and sell, sell, sell!!!25/11/2002 Latest news from ESCA is that for next season the draw will still be part of the format (after a close run vote). Broomhall will be joining division eight and should do well, if our experience against them this year is anything to go by.25/11/2002 The Forth valley junior cricket coaching scheme has been running every Sunday since the middle of October and will continue till the beginning of December. The club has several juniors at all three of the groups, U17, U15 & U13 in Alloa Academy and some in the afternoon sessions for Kwik cricket in Bridge of Allan. The practices are going well and the coaches are pleased at the commitment and improvement at all levels.25/11/2002 Scotland squad. Nice to see two former Clackmannan players, Bryn Lockie and Sanjay Patel have been included in the Scotland squad for next years "big league" sojurn south of the border. Best of luck in all that is to come gentlemen.25/11/2002 December Indoor junior practice begins on Tuesday the 7th of January 2003 at Alloa Academy games hall. The group times are; 6pm till 7pm Kwik cricket (from 5 to 11 year olds), 7pm till 8pm, U13 & U15, 8pm till 9pm, U17 plus selected U15's and seniors. Watch out for updates from our man in Australia. 23/12/2002 The draw for the SCU Trophy has been made, Clackmannan County meet Irvine at the Arns on the 8th of June in the first round. Irvine were beaten finalists in this trophy in 2001.23/12/2002 Clackmannan have withdrawn from the indoor competition to be held at the Cricket Academy in January. 23/12/2002 The club AGM was held on Friday night, in front of fair
turnout of members, the results of changes in the world order will be
handed down in the fullness of time. (that is, when the webmaster finds
out what went on). 15/12/2002 |
