By Scott Malcolmson
Clackmannan travelled to Edinburgh to face Morton without regulars Dan
Smith, Auranzeb Alamgir, Muktar Ahmed and Nick Bryant-Nichols. After
winning the coin toss Clackmannan elected to bowl on a very green wicket.
Alison Ramsay and Blair Campbell opened the bowling for Clackmannan.
Alison struck early taking the first wicket of the day after a fine reactive
catch by James Cox at first slip. In a fine opening spell of bowling
Alison would take another two wickets both well caught by Ally Band at
mid on.
Blair Campbell not to be outdone by his opening partner should have had
his first wicket when the batsmen looped the ball up to Rich Passe at
square leg. Unfortunately he dropped the catch however amongst the confusion
both batsmen ended up at the same end allowing Passe to flick the ball
to Simon McDowell for a run out. Campbell didn’t have to wait long
for a wicket after a nice catch by wicketkeeper McDowell.
With Alison having bowled 6 overs and getting 3 wickets for 9 runs she
declined a seventh over allowing her brother Neil a chance to bowl. Neil
struck in his 2nd over after Scott Malcolmson took his first catch of
the season at cover. With Neil’s next ball the new batsmen again
struck the ball in the air to cover. This time Malcolmson had to make
up the ground to take a spectacular one handed catch. Neil now on a hat-trick
next ball had the batsmen playing and missing but the ball missed the
stumps. Neil struck for his 3rd wicket in his next over.
Ally Band replaced Campbell and he joined the party bowling the batsmen
for his first wicket in four games. Taylor was then given the nod to
replace Band but with Morton struggling 9 wickets down and 40 on the
board Neil Ramsay wrapped up the innings by taking the last wicket in
the next over denying Greig Taylor his first bowl of the season.
Having skittled out Morton for 40, Clackmannan set about the small
chase with batsmen Greig Taylor and Noor Jhangir opening the batting.
At this point Nick Bryant-Nichols turned up with his two strong barmy
army and Taylor buoyed by the “Who are you” chants led the
chase playing some lovely front foot drives.
With boundaries hard to come by due to some long grass in the outfield,
Clackmannan chipped away at the score until Jhangir had seen enough and
in the 9th over hit the bowler for 6 over square leg in between two fours
through mid on. This brought Clackmannan to 40 after 9 overs and in the
tenth over Taylor scored the winning run off the 3rd ball.
This was a comprehensive victory for Clackmannan who excelled in all
departments of the game especially in the fielding which was poor the
previous week. Next week Clackmannan make the long trip to third placed
Dunbar for a top of the table clash.
