Match Report On the first league Saturday of the 2004 cricket season Clackmannan County 1st XI played Largo at the Arns. After two weeks of inclement weather the decision was made to play on the artificial wicket and the game began in glorious sunshine. Clackmannan won the toss and decided to bat. Neil Ramsay opened the batting only to be back in the pavilion before the end of the first over. Not quite the start the local side had hoped for. Tipo Sultan was joined at the wicket by James Couper, however, in the sixth over Sultan played round a ball from Barclay and was bowled for five. Captain Rasul came to the wicket and looking confident began to attempt to settle the side. James Couper supported his captain well, but was eventually out in the fourteenth over, bowled for six, with the score on 28. Gordon Oliver had an unusual off day and was soon back in the hutch for one run. The middle order of Jeff Thomas and Muktar Ahmed contributed a respectable twelve and ten respectively, while at the other end Rasul was on his way to a solid 44 before being caught behind off David Smith. The Clackmannan tail worked hard for their runs but, by the forty fourth over the side were all out for 120. Even on the slow soft outfield this total looked very vulnerable.

The Largo innings began after tea with Zahid Hussain and Matthew Booth opening the bowling for the home side. Hussain's pace cause the openers some problems, passing the bat frequently in the first spel,l but it was Booth who drew first blood. The eighteen year old, bowled his first three overs for no runs and took the first two wickets, both beautifully caught behind by Jeff Thomas. A good start to the innings four overs gone 16 for two wickets. A steady partnership by Guy Robinson(29) and Alistair Matthews(8) brought the Largo total to 47 before the fall of the next wicket. The first club wicket for Chris Harney again well caught by Jeff Thomas. Harney proved it was no fluke by sending Asman Ali back to the pavilion the very next ball. The hatrick was not to be however and new batsman Alistair Duncan began to set himself up for a long stay. His partnership with Robinson put on 27 before Robinson was bowled by Tipo Sultan. Robert Mowatt came and went without troubling the scorer, caught Hussain off a surprise ball by Rasul. Chris Barclay(20n.o.) compounded the damage he had done with the ball when, in partnership with Duncan(29n.o.) he saw Largo through to the win. 121 for 6 wickets in the forty second over. Clackmannan, beaten in their first second division game, can take heart from the enthusiasm our young side showed. On the down side, top scorer for Largo was Clackmannans Mr Extras with 37. 30 of these runs donated through no balls and wides. Next weeks game, at home against Murrayfield/DAFS.
