Match Report

Clackmannan County first XI travelled to Dresselrigg to play Livingston knowing that survival in the first division required a win. The weather was hot and sunny, it was an excellent batting wicket, it was Clackmannan Counties High Noon.

Livingston batted first and with professional Matt Friedlander unable to bowl through injury and fellow opening bowler Zahid Hussain unavailable a new opening attack was required. Captain Rasul asked Fouad Chaudhry and Greg Jones to weald the new ball. The pair made Livingston work hard for runs to begin with Ahmed back in the pavilion for 5 in the ninth over with 13 runs on the score sheet. Jack Allen picked up Gul(6) the other opening bat in his second over. From this point things took a turn for the worse. Jumani(39) and Professional Malik laid into the bowling in a big way. From Maliks first eleven scoring shots he hit eight fours and one six, needless to say the Clackmannan side were glad when he was at last run out for a score of 174. By now the Clackmannan bowling was in shreds, Ash Rasul took three wickets but at a costly 103 runs. The Livingston batsmen ploughed a furrow through the Clackmannan attack with Murdoch(23) and Asghar(19) adding to the damage. The final total for Livingston, once the score book had been corrected, was 293 for 5 in 50 overs. A long hot afternoon in the field and a big total to chase.

The Clackmannan innings began with captain Ash Rasul ringing the changes to the opening pair yet again. This time he decided to open with Jeff Thomas and himself. The new plan got off to a sticky start with Thomas removed by Malik in his second over, 1 wicket for nine runs. Rasul was joined by Greg Jones, "refreshed" after his unaccustomed stint of 15 overs as an opening bowler. Jones and Rasul worked away at the bowling topping the fifty mark before Rasul was caught behind off Asghar for 38. Gordon Oliver managed a quick 3 before losing his wicket in a run out. An unwanted dent in the rising confidence of the Clackmannan side with sixty on the board and still more than 35 overs to go. Still, only 230 to get and seven wickets to fall. Professional Matt Friedlander came to the crease knowing his opposite number had scored 174 an not knowing how his back would hold up. The answer when he returned eventually to the pavilion was OK. His 82 gave respectability and hope to the Clackmannan total and gave the South African his highest score in the league. Led by his example both Jack Allen(20) and Greg Shaw(12) settled into the run scoring way. However time was running out for Clackmannan and the opportunity to overtake the Livingston score was receding. Fouad Chauhdry was dismissed uncharacteristically for a mere 2 and by then it was left to Neil Ramsay 7 and Neil Brown to bat out the overs. At the end of the fifty overs Clackmannan were 267 for 8, 27 short of a win and a move to safety.

A more hopeful display for Clackmannan with the runs more evenly shared than in the past, but still more than ten catches dropped in the field. The accuracy of the bowling is still our achilles heel with 16 wides in the innings. Take away the runs scored through no balls and wide's and the gap between the two teams scores drops to 7 runs. Next week is another game, but Clackmannan in the second division is an odds-on betting option.
