Match Report Clackmannan County 1st XI travelled to Edinburgh on a damp cloudy day to play Murrayfield DAFS. The depressing weather allied with the dismal news of first team availability, only three regular 1st XI players were available for this game. The Clackmannan vice-captain Gordon Oliver lost the toss and Clackmannan were asked to take first strike. Gordon Oliver and Zahid Hussain opened the batting for Clackmannan against the accurately effective opening Murrayfield attack of Sorrell and Burne. The hopes of a big partnership were soon dashed, however with Oliver adjudged leg before wicket for 7 off Sorrell. Ash Rasul turned up in time to bat number three, stayed at the crease to score 12 including a six before being bowled by Burne. The by now accustomed collapse collapse in the Clackmannan innings kicked in and both Richard Passe and Muktar Ahmed were back in the dressing room for naught. Ian Davies scored 3 before succumbing to an LBW call off Burne. Hussain had in the meantime scored 10 before he was caught by Park off Laurence. David Mudie (12) provided the steadying influence Clackmannan needed while Kash Ali walloped a straight six then was run out for 7. David Henderson hit three before being bowled by Sorrell. He was replaced by Graham Oliver, the twelve year old batted well to keep out the Murrayfield attack but, in the end had nothing to show for his ten overs of defiance, caught by Park off Sorrell. Playing in his first game Gordon McNee score one and retired from the fray undefeated. Clackmannan's final score 67 all out in 37.4 overs. The Murrayfield reply began badly for them when opener Knight was caught by Henderson off Hussain for nothing. Murrayfield, however, batted cautiously, aware of the large number of overs available to them. It was not until captain Rasul eventually brought on David Mudie to bowl his ever accurate spin, on this turning wicket, that the next success was achieved. Vagh bowled by Mudie for 4. This brought to the crease Jayakanth Siva, the Sri Lankan batsman who did so much damage to the Clackmannan bowling attack in this fixture earlier in the season. Siva and Baikie took the game away from Clackmannan, both finishing undefeated, Siva on 24 and Bakie on 13. The final Murrayfield total, 69 for 3 wickets in 22 overs. A valiant effort by the Clackmannan team but relegation looms unless the level of commitment of the first team players to play on a regular basis can be guaranteed. The next game for the 1st eleven is on Saturday 17th July when they are at home to Stewarts Mellville Royal High 2. The game begins at 1 pm.
