| Match Report The Clackmannan County 1st team travelled to play Penicuik 2 on an overcast day with a strong possibility of rain. The game coincided with the annual Penicuik gala day and the Clackmannan team, still in search of their first win of the season, hoped to avoid giving Penicuik another reason for celebration. With one late change to the selected side the side travelled more in hope than expectation. Penicuik opened their innings with Ainslie and Hutt against the clackmannan opening attack of Matthew Booth and Chris Harney. Booth bowled well but with little luck. Hutt was first to go run out for 13, with the score on 32. Both the opening bowlers had been replaced when the second wicket fell to Tipu Sultan, 47 for two, however the bowling partnership of Sultan and Zahid Hussain was looking threatening. This proved to be the case with the rest of the Penicuik upper middle order being removed cheaply, Liddle bowled by Hussain for 4, Cursiter(2) and Yanhip(7) caught behind by Jeff Thomas off Sultan. The Penicuik innings recovered from this mid innings collape as Fraser made an excellent 60 before being brilliantly caught on the boundary by James Couper off Sultan. he was ably assisted by Taylor who carved a useful 41 not out by the end of the 50 overs. Final innings total 201 for 8 in 50 overs. The Clackmannan bowling looked a bit sharper than of late and with a bit more luck the side could have been facing a much smaller target. Captain Ash Rasul rang the changes with the counties batting line up yet again, this time deciding to try young James Mariner and the experienced Gordon Oliver to open the innings. Penicuik opened the bowling with Taylor and Morton, son of ex Stirling player Willie Morton. The Clackmannan openers began steadily taking three runs off each of the first four overs, both batsmen taking time to settle themselves for the task ahead. As the overs continued to mount Mariner and O)liver accelerated the score so that, by the seventeenth over, the partnership had passed the hundred mark and the Clackmannan dressing room was a different place from the doom city of previous weeks. Both batsmen were by now well in charge of proceedings and the Penicuik bowlers could find no answer to their, by now, impressive onslaught. The Clackmannan pair remained undefeated, James Mariner struck the winning blow with a six hit, the final score 207 for no wickets in 35.4 overs. A long awaited win for Clackmannan County and the highest first wicket partnership for the county in living memory. The statistic for the two batsmen, James Mariner 107 not out, including fifteen fours and a six and Gordon Oliver 86 not out, including fourteen fours and a six. A much needed boost for the first team and the club, onward and upward to the next game, which is at home to Falkland 2 next week. |
