Match Report

On an overcast day at the Arns, Clackmannan County 1st XI were put in to bat by Watsonians. The Clackmannan opening batsmen Greg Jones and Ash Rasul were immediately under pressure from an accurate bowling attack who used both pitch and atmospheric conditions to their advantage. Jones was first to depart, neatly caught behind by fellow Australian Julia Price for 4 runs. The first of two excellent catches by the Australian Womens wicket keeper. The Clackmannan top order then suffered a mini collapse losing Rasul, Oliver,Ramsay and Couper in quick succession for a combined score of two. Fortunately professional Matt Friedlander struck form with the bat to score a stabilizing 47 before being bowled by a ball that should have brought up his fifty. He was ably supported in his quest to pull Clackmannnan from their self inflicted mire by Jack Allen. Jack, this years Dollar Academy cricket captain, was playing his first game of the season for the club, by luck rather than team selection astuteness. Although Jack has played for Clackmannan after Dollar Academy breaks for holiday over the last couple of years, he was due to play for the second eleven this week. However due to call offs in the first eleven Jack was promoted. He grasped the opportunity to show his ability with the bat, much to the joy of the Clackmannan faithful. His 48 runs made in mature fashion were a credit to him and gave respectability to the Clackmannan total of 140 all out in 42 overs.

Watsonians gifted an extra eight overs to overhaul the Clackmannan total had time to spare. The Clackmannan bowling attack was lively but could not find the wicket taking penetration exhibited by the Watsonains opening bowlers. James Janion (56) was the only Watsonians batsman to scored more than the Clackmannan extras total of 25. Stephen Lockhart was third highest scorer with 19. That man Allen made his presence felt in the field with a cracking catch off David Henderson's bowling. David was the most economical of the Clackmannan bowlers, he bowled twelve overs for less than two runs per over and took two wickets. While wickets fell on a regular basis the total was not enough to prevent Watsonians Julia Price hitting the winning four off a full toss from Ash Rasul. Final total Watsonians 144 for 8 wickets scored in 41 overs. The Clackmannan bowlers bowled well and while it could be said that poor fielding robbed them of their chance of victory. However, the real problem stemmed from the early Clackmannan batting collape. Another game lost where more circumspect batting for fifty overs could have given the side a chance of more points and a better oportunity to win the game.
