Match Report

Clackmannan Counties first team headed for Edinburgh in the knowledge that every point was vital in the race to avoid relegation. On the Scottish Saltires "home" ground, Raeburn Place, the Clackmannan side faced a fourth placed Grange second team. On what looked like a good batting track the Alloa outfit had first strike. Captain Rasul had decided to ring the changes and the batting order looked more balanced than it has for quite a while. The two openers Neil Ramsay and Jeff Thomas gave the team a solid foundation, for a change, it was the eleventh over before the first wicket fell. Jeff Thomas run out for a hard earned six runs. Ramsay was eventually out for thirteen, stumped in more ways than one by spinner Burns. Gordon Oliver replaced "Harry Potter" and proceeded to show the other more eminent batsman, who seemed to be struggling to cope with the bowling, how it should be done. Oliver's performance was a shining light in an otherwise dismal top order performance. The return of Fouad Chaudhry from holiday has given the team fresh hope and the unassuming all rounder yet again came up with the goods. Joined by Madusar Javed the pair took the total to a more respectable 138 for 6. Chaudhry (27) Javed (29). The final three batsmen batted out the fifty overs, which in itself was a welcome milestone in a season of missed opportunity. The final score 150 for 9 in fifty overs. Best of the bowlers for Grange was spinner Rob Grant with 6 wickets for 33 runs in 15 overs.

The Grange innings began well enough for Clackmannan with Fouad Chaudhry bowling Milroy for eight in the fifth over. The two opening bowlers Chaudhry and Javed started well but before long the Grange batsmen began to dominate. In the whole Clackmannan innings the Alloa team hit ten fours, Grange passed that target in the first 16 overs. The change in bowling brought no respite, the Grange batsmen scoring freely off all of the bowlers. The ignominy of John Cropper retiring after making 55 speaks volumes. Cropper was replaced with Wyllie, Grant(62) and Wyllie(16) scored freely overtaking the Clackmannan total in 28 overs.

Clackmannan well beaten by a side who deserve their place in the league. This week's opponents Grange seconds typify the divide between the high profile large city clubs and the other local based clubs in the league. While this could be seen as an excuse, the difficulties the local side face are internal. The morale in the team has deteriorated throughout the season, the teams self belief is low. The problem is ideally pinpointed by an childish attitude to mistakes in the field commented on by several of the opposition teams. The Clackmannan players are uncomfortable when fielding in case they make a mistake. Whether this is due to the criticism they receive when fielding in a game or the inept fielding drills imposed on them when practicing is immaterial, the upshot is that things will have to change before all of the first team's maligned players decide to vote with their feet.
