| Match Report At nine thirty on Saturday morning the Clackmannan County 2nd XI game against Broomhall looked doubtful, the grass pitch was greasy after overnight rain and the weather forecast was for rain by lunchtime. It was agreed to go ahead on the artificial and suffer the consequences of the weather. By the start of the match the grass pitch had dried enough to play and while cloudy, there was no rain. Scott Malcolmson won the toss and decided to give the opposition first strike on the drying pitch. Broomhall opened with Michael's Warren and Holmes while the Clackmannan bowling spearhead was in the hands of Neil Ramsay and Muktar Ahmed. Broomhall started cautiously and both Ramsay and Ahmed were unlucky not to strike as catches went to ground. the first wicket fell with the score on 37, Mike Warren caught by wicketkeeper Richard Passe off Ramsay for 13. Ian Barron(0) also fell to Ramsay, this time to a catch by Noor Jhangir, in the fifteenth over, with the score on 41. Liam Doherty joined Mike Holmes at the crease and Doherty opened up the game with a well judged spell of hitting. His 30 runs included six fours and before he left caught and bowled by Graham Bayes, the partnership had double the score to 82. Garry Seith came to the wicket and acted as a foil to +the increasingly productive Mike Holmes as he forged his way to 79 before also being caught and bowled by Bayes. 150 for 4 in the 39th over. Seith was joined by Stuart Glasgow but Seith(14) lasted only another two overs before being run out with the score on163. Ramsay was brought back into the attack and in his first over yorked Chris Hoefling(1) , David Goodchild lasted but a short time Caught by Ahmed off Bayes. Goodchilds brother Michael(12) joined Glasgow(13) to take the Broomhall side to the forty fifth over, final score 186 for 7. The Clackmannan innings opened with the usual partnership of Neil Ramsay and Alan Oliver and the pair increased their effort of last week to post a score of 22 before Ramsay lifted his head to a ball on his off stump, bowled Doherty for 13. Oliver was joined at the crease by Graham Bayes, the concern was that Bayes how had twisted his back fielding was not moving very freely. In the 25th over, Oliver was bowled by McIlroy for 24 valuable runs, the score was 82 for 2 wickets. Muktar Ahmed, Ian Davies and Greg Shaw all played their part in keeping up an end, Bayes worked away, crafting an innings while the score mounted to121 for 5 in 33 overs. By the thirty ninth over Noor Jhangir and Bayes had taken the score to 159 when Jhangir was well caught on the boundary by David Goodchild for 15. Running out of partners Bayes increased the tempo, until, with the score on181 for 8 and with his personal total on 98 he was run out going for a second run on a leg bye. An excellent innings, unlucky not to hit his century, but not bad for someone with a sore back. The stage was set for an exciting finish, only 7 runs to get, with just over two overs to go and two wickets to fall. The drama was heightened by the fact that joining wicketkeeper Richard Passe at the wicket was youngster Oranzeb Jhingir, age 12 playing in his first second team game. The youngster played gamefully and played his shots but was caught at deepish midwicket by Stuart Glasgow. 181 for 9 with two overs to go. Enter Alistair Band, who had bowled accurately in the Broomhall innings but with no luck, still seven runs to get, the fifteen year old looked calm and composed. The next over tied the score, however, disappointment, the third ball of the final over Passe popped up the ball for a good return catch by bowler Glasgow. An exciting end to a well matched game, played in good spirit. The final points tally Broomhall 16, Clackmannan 14. The seconds meet Carlton 3 somewhere in Edinburgh next Saturday and hope to build on this interesting result. | |||||||||||||||
