Match Report After the severe thunderstorms and heavy rain on Thursday night the Arns was a bit damp in places and the wicket was on the soft side. Carlton won the toss and put Clackmannan in to bat. The Clackmannan openers Neil Ramsay and Richard Passe started slowly against the accurate opening bowling of Dave Carter and Simon Robb. Ramsay was the first victim, having survived several chances in the field. Caught off Carter for 3 in the 17th over with only 16 runs on the board. Ian Davies joined Passe and took the score along to 29 before Davies was run out for 4. Graham Bayes was quickly caught of Barrett for no score and Scott Malcolmson joined Passe to push the score along. In a heady spell where the partnership took eleven off one over the score was carried along to 43, three overs later Malcolmson was adjudged LBW to Murray for 5. Muktar Ahmed returned to the pavilion LBW to Robb for zero and the Clackmannan side had lost half their wickets for 50 runs. Bob Ramsay joined the confident looking Passe at the crease and hung about for four overs before giving his wicket away, again, this time caught behind off Robb for 7. Fifteen year old Ross Archibald joined Passe and began to settle into his first second team game. Richard Passe was playing the innings of his career so far, coping with the heat and the difficult pitch conditions admirably. He worked his way to fifty runs including only the one boundary in an excellent innings of grit, determination and not a little skill. He was eventually deceived by a ball from Robb which saw him caught in the final over of the innings. Alistair Band joined Ross Archibald for the final few balls only to be run out for no score going for a suicidal run. Ross Archibald did well remaining not out at the end for 10. Clackmannan's innings closed at 97 for 8 after 45 overs. Not an insurmountable score but on a wicket giving a deal of help to the bowlers a challenge for the Carlton batsmen. Carlton opened with Andy Abraham and Tom Barrett to the same Clackmannan bowling attack as last week, Neil Ramsay and Alistair Band. Ramsay got the side off to a good start having Abrahams caught behind by Richard Passe for zero in the first over. The two openers kept the pressure on the Carlton bats, despite a rash of no balls at both ends. George Stevenson had joined Barrett and was slowly building an innings, by over number 13 the score had moved on to 31 for one. Then Ramsay struck again this time bowling Barrett for two and next ball having Ross Kennedy brilliantly caught behind by Passe for a duck. Muktar Ahmed who had replaced Band, got himself into the action directly after Ramsay's success by having Stevenson caught, yet again by Passe for 13. Ahmed bowled his first 5 overs for no runs and took one wicket, he finished his spell with 1 for 12 in 8 overs. Graham Bayes replacing Ramsay next over and immediately took the wicket of Jack Kennedy caught by Malcolmson for 2. The Falkland total was now 5 for 33 with sixteen overs gone. Alan Murray and young Gareth Forrester came together but a promising partnership was broken when Forrester(3) was run out by an excellent throw from the boundary by young Alistair Band. Davie Carter came to the crease and immediately looked like he meant business. The Carlton batsmen were beginning to move the score along until Graham Bayes pulled off his, by now customary, caught and bowled routine to dismiss Carter for a useful 17 with the score standing on 61. Another bowling change saw twelve year old Graham Oliver enter the fray and in his second over collect a wicket, caught behind by Passe of a skied edge by Murray(5). Young Fraser Boyd was joined by Gavin Scott and the young and "old" combination started to lift the score. The Carlton side were beginning to reach out for the Clackmannan target. The captain brought Ramsay back on and in his first over back he bowled Scott for twelve. With the score on 89 Ramsay struck again finishing the Carlton innings having Simon Robb caught by Muktar Ahmed at midwicket for 5. Carlton all out for 89 in 34 overs. A win for Clackmannan and plenty for the club to celebrate, Richard Passe for his 50 and four catches behind the wicket and Neil Ramsay for his 5 for 20 in 9 overs. Two of the products of Clackmannan's coaching policy who have shown that hard work and dedication will eventually pay dividends. With the extra confidence success provides, both should go on to greater things. Another good close game, played in good spirit with both sides using their juniors in important roles. Scottish cricket can only benefit from this type of approach. Next weeks game for the seconds is a trip to Edinburgh to play Crammond 2.
