Match Report Clackmannan County 2nd XI travelled to Roseburn behind Murrayfield to play Crammond 2's. On a pitch that looked as if it might have some help for the bowlers Cramond batted first. Clackmannan opened with the usual Neil Ramsay, Alistair Band combination, this time, fourteen year old Alistair Band made the breakthrough, Steven Roberts bowled for 0 in the fourth over with two on the board. The two openers were bowling well but with no luck. Alistair Band was extremely unlucky when Reyaz Abdul hit a ball straight to Greig Taylor at mid on only for the ball to cannon off Wayne Nally backing up at the bowlers end. Nally, no doubt, did not feel particularly lucky being on the end of the hit or nursing the ensuing bruise. Nally, however, was next to go, bowled by Ramsay for 2 with the score on 31. Abdul, who was scoring freely, while parading some unconventional shots, was joined by Vimal D'Sousa who straight away looked the part, batting at number 4. The pair put on 40 runs by the 13th over when Abdul was caught behind by Passe gloving a ball from Ahmed for an interesting 28 runs. In the seventeenth over Radnish Singh was caught at cover off Ramsay for 8 and the score had moved on to 52. D'Sousa had moved on to his mid thirties when a confident appeal for caught behind off Graham Bayes was rejected. D'Sousa seemed inspired by this let off and set about the bowling with a will. While he slapped the ball for six fours and three sixes, two of them into the river, Donnie Cochrane, at the other end, played a secondary role until he was caught at slip by Bob Ramsay off Muktar Ahmed for 8. Ahmed was bowling well, keeping the runs down, and he was the bowler who was eventually successful in taking the wicket of D'Sousa, bowled for 92. Young Graham Oliver had John Gray stumped by Passe for 1, as the leg spinner began to get the ball to bite into the track. Graham Bayes dismissed Reza Aboobadour, bowled for 2 and had John Manners caught, again at slip by Bob Ramsay for nothing. The innings closed at 43 overs with a score of 164 for 9, with Falconer Crichton not out on 4. On this pitch an excellent score which Clackmannan would be hard pushed to better. The Clackmannan innings opened with the regular partnership of Neil Ramsay and Richard Passe and they immediately began to attempt to rotate the strike. The pair were coping well with the bowling but were finding it difficult to find the boundary through the uncompromising outfield. Crammond replaced Aboobodour with D'Sousa but it was not until Donnie Cochrane was brought into the attack that the Clackmannan opening partnership was broken. Richard Passe caught by Crichton off Cochrane for 20 after 23 overs with the score on 76. Graham Bayes joined Ramsay and the pair took the score along to 115 before Bayes played all around a ball from Cochrane to be bowled for 21. By this time Neil Ramsay had passes his 50 and was playing exceptionally well, despite the humidity and the flies. He was joined by Scott Malcolmson and by this time the Clackmannan team had hopes that the score set could be achievable. Malcolmson scored 5 before being caught behind by Abdul off D'Sousa, Muktar Ahmed followed in short order caught Singh bowled D'Sousa for a duck. Alison Ramsay joined her brother and with her customary aplomb laid about the bowling. However, next to go was brother Neil, mistiming a ball from Cochrane, gratefully accepted by the safe hands of Falconer Crichton. An excellent innings by the nineteen year old Neil Ramsay, made all the more pleasing through his use of text book batting strokes. All this despite the heat and being hit on the neck early in his innings by a throw from the outfield. Another young Clackmannan player come of age with his batting this season. With Neil's dismissal the run chase became more difficult and the Clackmannan players needed to make inroads into the Crammond bowling attack. Ian Davies scored a tip and run 4 before being bowled by Cochrane. Bob Ramsay skelped the ball for two first ball, then was comprehensively bowled next ball. Twelve year old Graham Oliver joined Alison Ramsay and while they worked hard at rotating the strike they could not do enough to make the runs required. Clackmannan finished eight runs short of the Cramond total with 3 wickets in hand at the end of the 45 overs. The young Clackmannan side had played well, fielding well in the heat and humidity of the afternoon and batting with purpose in the humidity and flies of the late evening. The second team shows promise for the future, as the time and effort the club puts into coaching the youngsters begins to pay dividends. The 2nd XI are at home to Musselburgh next Saturday, the game starts at 1.30pm.
