Match Report

Clackmannan Counties 2nd XI travelled to Edinburgh with only nine players on Saturday but despite the problems this creates acquitted themselves well against Kirk Brae. Batting first Kirk Brae made 301 for 1(Sangster 168 not out) on a postage stamp sized ground. Greg Shaw was the only Clackmannan bowler to take a wicket although Matthew Booth and Paul Nash bowled well under the circumstances. The Clackmannan side fielded well and the several youngsters in the side performed well sticking well to their allotted tasks. Congratulations to Richard Passe and Alistair Band on their debut performance. Bowling for the first time for the seconds in a league game with 200 on the board, one guy on 150 and a tiny wee ground is not the easist way to start a senior bowling career.

Clackmannan faced the daunting total with determination. Openers Neil Brown (43) and Richard Passe(14) made 65 before the first wicket fell, a good solid start by these two young players. Captain for the day, Ian Davies, then held the side together through a slight mid-order collapse to score an excellent 60 runs. The younger members of the team not to be outdone put up a valiant rearguard action in which Matthew Booth starred scoring 34 before being stumped. After a brave attempt at this huge total the Clackmannan side finished with 207 for 8 in 40 overs. Five overs short of a well earned draw. Had the team had another two players, any of the six who were picked but couldn't play then this could well have been a different result. While the side were beaten, the determination shown, and the experience gained by the youngsters will stand the team in good stead in the future.

This team should be sponsored either by a pharmacutical company or a travel company. Lucky white heather? Note for the future, it would be nice if players would arrange to be sick, injured and holiday outside the cricket season. One of these days the team initially picked will all be able to play and someone is going to get a terrible gubbing!!
