Match Report

The Clackmannan County 2nd XI were back to business as usual this week with six changes in the starting line up from the original picked team. The influx of juniors brought about by call offs gave the team its youngest average age for some considerable time.

On a really hot day the Clackmannan side had the opportunity to top up their suntan by fielding first, the heat not a great joy for the opening bowlers. Clackmannan started well with the first wicket going down in the fourth over Chris Sayer(6) caught by young Alistair Band of Paul Nash for 6.This brought Ian Barnes to the wicket to partner the "experienced" Dick Dakin. Before the next wicket fell in the nineteenth over these two had worked their magic and moved the score on to 75. Dakin out caught Ian Cairns bowled Alistair Band for 34. There was to be no respite, however, for the sweltering Alloa side, David Galloway came to the crease and by the time Barnes(38), caught Cairns (again!) bowled Paul Nash and Galloway departed there was 233 on the board for 5 wickets. David Galloway run out for 85. A good afternoon for Alistair Band , who also had a hand in this wicket , a powerful accurate throw giving wicketkeeper Grieg Taylor the chance of his first run out for the seconds. Alistair Gibson(11) and David Seath(17) whacked their way to declaration at the 42 over point. Fourteen of Seath's 17 being scored in one over. Final score 247 for 5 in 42 overs. All of the Clackmannan bowlers and fielders deserve credit for sticking to their task in the oppressive heat of the afternoon.

The experienced Clackmannan oldsters Ian Davies and Neil Tranter opened the batting. David Seath opened the bowling but confirmed the problems he seemed to be having at the interval by only being able to bowl one over before leaving the field. Despite his will to continue, his body had other ideas and Largo had lost a valuable bowler at an early stage in the game. Davies and Tranter batted together for 34 overs and put on 126 before Davies fell to Barnes, caught by Gibson for 58. A great effort to amass more runs than their combined ages. John Brown came to the crease and continued last weeks good work, this time out for 20, caught Galloway bowled Barnes. Paul Nash(7) played his part as Neil Tranter began to open out to go for the win. Grieg Taylor and Ian Cairns returned to the pavilion without troubling the scorer and ensured their place in the players awards night duckie line up. From a surge towards the final total the Clackmannan side were forced to play out for the points. Mike Nash and Alistair Band seeing out the final overs for a final score of 170 for 6 in 48 overs.

An enjoyable game despite the heat (its, not often that's the problem in Scotland). A game played in good spirit without any "chat" at the wicket. Our relegation now only a matter of time with one game left to go. The seconds will miss going to Largo, it's a beautiful ground and we will miss the friendly but competitive fixtures we have had with them over the past few years. Still, as both sides believe in promoting junior cricket at least we can still visit.
