Match Report

Clackmannan County 2nd XI travelled to Cavalry Park, in the lee of Arthur's Seat to play the Marchmont second string. A full team (eventually), a hot sunny day, and directions on how to find the ground what more could the two's desire. After they got lost, they knew they were late because Paul Nash got there before them, the game was on.

Marchmont won the toss and put Clackmannan in to bat, a strange decision in the heat, but they obviously fancied their chances of knocking the visitors over quickly. Clackmannan opened with Ian Davies and Neil Tranter who started confidently despite the uneven nature of the wicket. Tranter was first wicket to fall, unusually for him, mistiming a ball to be caught at mid-off. First wicket down for 37 in the 10th over, a solid start. Davies was joined by Alison Ramsay and the score went briskly along to 52 in 4 overs before Davies was caught and bowled "going after the spinner". John Brown playing his second game of the season came to the crease and after a quiet start began to set about the Marchmont bowling. Despite losing Ramsay for 13 Brown built up a top scoring fifty, only the second in his career, before being caught behind. Mike Nash just back from injury made 7 in support of John Brown but was overshadowed by his son Paul. Paul Nash replaced his father at the crease and to the delight of his team-mates and his "fan club on the hill?" made 28 before being caught. The lower order were cleaned up by the Marchmont opening bowlers, the side all out for 166 in 43 overs. Best of the Marchmont bowlers, well no one really, they all chipped in. Snowdon and Smith were the only bowlers to get by with no wides in an innings which contained one 13 ball over and more than 30 extras.

Mike Nash using all his customary guile looked at the pitch and opened with spinners Paul Nash and Graham Oliver. The plan paid off when Sunil was caught by Ramsay off Oliver off the first ball of the second over. The spinners bowled fairly tightly, but the odd fielding slip gave away some boundaries for the score to be 43 in the eleventh over when the third wicket fell. This brought Chetty and Holland together at the crease and by the time Chetty was caught by Brown off Rasul for 32 with the score on 100 the damage was done. Mike Nash manipulated the bowling but even with both John Brown and Abed Rasul containing the batsmen well for a while, space was still being found for strikes to the boundary. Holland, an Australian playing in only his second year of cricket, scored 37 and carried his bat with help from Probert(11), then Wheelhouse. Wheelhouse batted well with a boundary riddled 23 not out. Final score 170 for 5 in 35 overs.
