Match Report written by Greig Taylor
Haddington were the next opponents for Clackmannan County in their quest to stay up in ESCA Division 2. Clackmannan skipper Scott Malcolmson won the toss and asked Haddington to bat. Openers Talbot and Cruickshank found scoring easily as the opening bowlers Matthew Booth and Zahid Hussain lacked penetration in their opening overs.
The runs began to dry up when the skipper brought on Neil Ramsay and Muktar Ahmed. They bowled very well and Haddington found it difficult to score. In Ramsay’s 3rd over he had Cruickshank LBW for 13. R.Hiley joined his captain at the crease and made capital out off the numerous dropped catches taking the score from 52 to 151, 1 short of a century partnership. Graham Bayes brought into the attack bowled Hiley for 26. Bonnington joined Talbot and he too scored freely. Next wicket to fall was Talbot, he had been dropped after scoring 32 and a hundred runs later he was caught by Ahmed as he went for another big shot. Bonnington also returned to the pavilion, bowled by skipper Malcolmson for 32. Malcolmson’s first league wicket was a joy to the energetic less Clacks side. Gray and Raymond batted the overs and took the Haddington score to 242 for the loss of only 4 wickets. A tough challenge for the home side!
Passe and Malcolmson opened the innings for Clackmannan and played well sharing a 42 partnership for the 1st wicket. Malcolmson(20) was bowled by Hiley and Passe caught by Cruickshank bowled by Gray for 15 runs. Graham Oliver and Graeme Bayes formed a partnership in which both scored well keeping Clackmannan up with the run rate. When Bayes tried to loft a ball over deep midwicket and was caught, the Clackmannan chances of scoring 150 runs in 30 overs were severely dented. Bayes caught Chalmers bowled Gray for 29 runs. Neil Ramsay was a judged LBW for 1 runs the next over scoring a meagre 1 run. Zahid Hussain joined young Oliver and the two began to build a little partnership. Oliver's was the next wicket to fall, again ajudged LBW by Gray for 10. Gray had finished his fifteen over spell and had taken 3 for 36. Alan Oliver came to crease and played a typical innings, scored mainly in 1’s and 2’s. This did the scoreboard a lot of good as it kept it ticking over. By this time Clackmannan were looking for bonus points as the set target was not in reach for the youngsters still to bat. Hussain and Oliver were both bowled by Kumar for 24 and 12 respectively. Matthew Booth and late replacement Kash Ali were the new batsmen. Booth scored 5 runs and Ali 3 which brought the total past 150. This sealed another bonus point for the home side. Greig Taylor(0) was not out and last man, Muktar Ahmed, was sick and did not bat. The final score Clackmannan 151 all out. The points total, Haddington 20, Clackmannan 6. The 1st XI play Stewarts Melville Royal High 2nd XI at Edinburgh next Saturday.
