Match Report (Greig Taylor) (unabridged Webmaster) Doune – the adopted ground for CCCC season 2005 – saw the last game played on it last Saturday. An experienced 2nd XI played hosts to Holy Cross 3rd XI. In a relegation battle with Fauldhouse 2nd XI, Clacks needed the 20 points and hope that Cask & Barrel can defeat FVCC for us to jump them in the league positions. An intriguing day for sure! Skipper for the day, Graeme Bayes won the toss and decided to bat. He opened with experienced Ian Davies and U-13 captain, Dan Smith. The partnership lasted only 2 balls as Davies chased a wide one off Malik and nicked the ball, which was caught by keeper Mackay. Graeme joined the youngster and the played in a confident manner. Smith (5) was unlucky as he pushed at a ball and it popped up and landed directly into the bowlers’ hand, caught and bowled by Sulman Malik. Clacks lasted recruit, Gordon Kidd joined his skipper and the two started playing their natural games, blasting the bowlers’ to all parts of the ground. The pair put on a 44-third wicket partnership before Kidd was bowled off a ball that hit his stomach and then ricocheted back onto the base of his stumps. A solid 25 runs from Kidd (including four 4’s and one “gigantic” 6). The captain asked J.D. Henderson to bat number 5. This was a tactical move moving the veteran from number 9 to 5 as a pinch blocker! He certainly did his job, assisting Bayes in doubling the Clacks score from 63 for 3 to 128 for 4. His excuse for the bad shot was, “…I was tired and I decided it was time to go for it!” Next bowl he was clean bowled by Geddes for 20 runs. Muhktar Ahmed (13) came in and instantly played an authentic cricket shot, pulling the ball for 4. He did it the next ball and then the following ball. His fourth ball was a Yorker that demolished his stumps. An innings that ignited the last 10 over charge by the Clacks side. Wicket-keeper, Greig Taylor joined Bayes – who had now passed 50 runs – and the two looked comfortable. Bayes tried to loft a drive over mid-ons’ head but actually put right down hi throat. A superb innings off 71 by the skipper which was needed for the clacks side to post a target. Kashif Ali came to the crease to replace him. A consolidating innings from Ali saw him score four runs before his off-stump was up-rooted from the ground. Alistair Band and Ben Craven supported Taylor as he started taking the attack to the bowlers. Taylor hit his highest score of the season, a solid knock of 25 runs that took the clacks score from 149 to 182. He made sure that his side – in desperate needs for points – achieved an extra 2 batting points before he advanced down the wicket and missed a straight ball. Taylor bowled by Malik for 25 runs which included 4 fours. Blair Campbell ended up on 1 not out and Clacks finished on 184 for 10 wickets in 44 overs. Congratulations to Graeme Bayes in passing 250 runs this season and to Sulman Malik for taking his first 5 wicket haul. Clacks opened with Alistair Band and Gordon Kidd. None of whom snapped a wicket so the skipper changed it around and brought on Ahmed and Henderson. Openers, Malik and Ellis had put on a 47-first wicket partnership before Malik skied a bowled in the air and was caught by Kashif Ali for 23. D Sharpe was next in but found the accurate bowling of Clacks difficult to score off of and returned to the pavilion for 0 runs, bowled through the gate by Ahmed. Paul Bailey and Richard Ellis continued to score freely taking Holy Cross to 84 before the later was bowled by Ahmed. A vital wicket for Clackmannan as Ellis (35) looked a dangerous batsmen. Mackay joined Bailey but he was gone soon as he was bowled by an aggressive Kidd for 5 runs. A wicket that was deserved! Lytle and Geddes were both bowled by Bayes whilst Bailey stood at the other end and saw his team-mates crumble in what was a good fielding and bowling performance by Clacks. Bailey was eventually removed when keeper, Taylor spilled the catch but had quick reactions and threw down the stumps. Bailey was short of his ground and he had to depart for 69. A good effort by Bailey in an effort to win the game for his side. A Graham was caught and bowled by Bayes (10-0-34-3) for 0 runs. Russell Eberst was 1 not out and Lawire finished on 0 not out. The Holy Cross side finishing 25 runs behind the jubilant Clacks side. The result from Fauldhouse is still unknown but surely the side will know sooner or later. A valiant performance from a good team in a pressurized game. A must win game was won but was it a win too late . . .
