Match Report (Greig Taylor) The dreaded weather stayed away for what was a historic day for the club – this year – in which saw them take on friendly rivals Gargunnock at the Arns. After the drainage work done during the winter, all the players were excited about playing at our “real” home. The Clacks luck continued as skipper for the day; M Booth won the toss and put the visitors into bat. The guests opened with skipper, Ralph Catts and youngster, Malcolm Sutherland. The later was to go first off the bowling of recently new recruit, Gordon Kidd. An instinctive catch by Alan Oliver at gully was his downfall and Clacks had GVCC 6 for 1 off 4 overs. Meanwhile at the other end, James Couper was keeping his bowling nice and tidy (3-0-5-0). Alan Oliver was brought on to replace Kidd at the railway end. His first ball to new batsmen Fraser “Frog” Kuhlwilm was cut by the batsmen. He began to run and then kept on running back to the pavilion as second game in a row James Couper took a screamer of a catch at point, diving to his left! A great bit of inspiration that really got the team going and they started to field and bowl aggressively. This was the penetration that the senior teams have lacked this year and their junior counterparts had shown them how to pressurize the opposing team. Sean Ferrie and his captain began to create a nice little partnership before Oliver soon broke it before anything severe. An in-swinging yorker - not the same pace as Waqur Younis though Alan! – deceived the batsmen and bowled him through the gate. GVCC were 24 for 3 after 9 overs and things were going well for the young clacks side. Sean Ferrie was had now taken the senior role and was playing a typical Ferrie innings. Nurdling the ball around before dispatching the occasional ball – clear of the fielders - to score a boundary. John Crossland was run out for 2 by Kash Ali as the veteran was too eager to steal the strike and finding himself 3 yard short off the thin, white line that ensured his safety. Billy Pretrious came to the crease and ballooned a ball up straight in to the air that was heading directly for new man, Kidd. He dropped it. I believe that he was more embarrassed that he had dropped such a catch than shocked. The rest of the team was swithering between the two. He was not to add more runs anyway as he was trapped LBW by U-13 captain, Dan Smith for 7. Credit to the bowler who bowled a good line and length and got his just rewards (2-0-10-1). GVCC youngster, Josh Mountford played well and supported Ferrie to his fifty. This was Sean’s maiden half-century against the club and, boy was he happy! The wicket-keeper who can bat can also bowl. Richard Passe proved this as the keeper dislodged the bails to send Mountford back to the changing room. A good spell by an underused bowler. The last over was bowled by Kidd and the Gargunnock side scampered a few singles and two to take their score to 98 for 6 in their allocated 20 overs. Sean Ferrie played the anchor role for the team finishing 54 not out! If Clackmannan were to chase down the runs then they had to get off to a very good and quick start. This was achieved as the home side was 15 for 1 after 3 overs. The man to depart Greig Taylor played a pathetic shot – by his standards (jings! it must have been something WebM)– and departed for a solitary run. Although keeper, Ross Murray and Alan Oliver were scoring enough to keep up with the required rate of 5 an over. At the tenth over clacks were 51 for 2. Alan Oliver (20) was bowled by a deceiving ball by veteran spin bowler, John Crossland. He got on to bounce and clip the leg stump which saw the end of the night for the left-hander. James Couper was next in and he fell short, literally off his stumps. He slipped on the greasy surface and a half-tracker bounced over him and he watched the ball crash in the violet stumps. An unfortunate way to get out but things like that happen. Skipper Booth joined Murray and the two began to slow up. At the 15th over Clacks need to be at 75 runs but they were 14 behind, sitting on 61. The next wicket to fall was Murray who played a very good and solid innings of 26. A useful, junior cricketer who will be a great addition to the squad for many years to come. Explosive batsmen, Gordon Kidd came in and started hitting runs. He and Booth took the score up to 74 before the later was exposed to a nasty bouncer that popped up in the air to be caught by Kuhlwilm. Tense moments for the side as they dearly wanted to win. Kash Ali joined Kidd and the two were to bat to the last over where Clacks need 20 to win with 5 wickets left in hand. The first ball of Crossland’s last over was dispatched and placed over the straight boundary for a mighty six. Could Kidd do the job for Clacks? HE then kept on hitting balls and running quick twos that kept him on strike. With 3 balls to go. 9 runs to find. Two balls to go, 8 runs to score. Last delivery off the day and a six was needed to tie the match. Anything else and the Clacks side would lose. The next ball was hit upwards but not towards the boundary. It was hit high in the air and Sutherland got underneath it and caught onto the catch. A physical loss for Clacks but mentally the team, took it as a win. All the players saw what can be done if a team plays together. How the connection between everyone enriches confidence throughout the team and it can create a lot of pressure in the opposing side. A night that was to be remembered for many things; Ferries’s maiden half-century at the Arns; Gordon Kidd and Ross Murray’s debut performance at the Arns; Couper’s screamer of a catch as well as Oliver’s quick reactions; yet most importantly, cricket was played at the ground beloved by so many players. It was a fantastic site to see 22 white shirted individuals playing at the “cobweb covered house” like ground called THE ARNS!!!!! (Cobweb covered house? where does he get this stuff, and can I have a pint of it as well, I don't know, the youth of today. Webm)
