Match Report

by  Greig Taylor  KARACHI 2001 REVISITED  Whit! (Quirky or what!! Webmeister)

In 2001, England played Pakistan at Karachi.  Graham Thorpe and Nasser Hussain won the test match for England in light that was classed as “Pitch Black”.   Reminiscents of that night were evident at The Arns on Wednesday.  Good grief  Clackmannan took on a strong Westquarter team.  ‘Quarter opened the proceedings with two youngsters but the number 1 batsman was back in the pavilion after 2 balls, clean bowled by Sultan.  Three balls later and they had now lost their second wicket, again cleaned bowled by Sultan.   New dad, Gordon Kidd, also wanted in the action and he got rid off two of their batsmen in his three over spell.  In a 16-over match, for the home side to take 5 wickets for the loss of only 26 runs in their first 6 overs was a great achievement.  Couper and Smith were brought into the attack.  Suddenly, Couper had danger man, Baqi caught at slip by Kidd.  Couper was only to take the one wicket in his 3 overs.  Smith, on the other hand, got rid off two Westquarter batsmen for the loss of 12 runs in his 3 overs.  Great work by all the opening and first change bowlers.  Auranzeb Alamgir, Richard Passe and Greig Taylor all bowled an over without taking a wicket.  Graeme Bayes bowled the last over and took 1 wicket.  Last ball of the innings, Alamgir threw a ball in from the boundary and ran the last batsmen out by at least, 5 yards.  A great effort from the Clackmannan side to reduce Quarter to only 80 off the 16 overs.

Tipu Sultan opened the batting in an unusual way.  His first four scoring shots were three 4’s and a single.  His partner, Kidd only lasted two balls, caught at cover for 0 runs.  Graeme Bayes came in and began to pace the innings.  He scored ones and two, putting in the occasional 4.  Once Sultan was out for 16, Clacks were 10 runs above the rate.  James Couper continued in the same aggressive style, hitting 23 in next to no time.  By this time you good not see the ball and this was the downfall by the batsmen, stumped off Baqi.  When Greig Taylor hit the winning runs, the Clacks side had chased down the target with 3.1 overs to spare.  A good victory for all the lads at the Arns.  Last game of the season on Sunday against Broomhall. The game starts at 2pm and the team have to meet at the Arns for 1pm.
